What is Inflammation?

Our body has its own immune system which protects us from infections and diseases. When these immune cells function during the process of defence, some of the typical responses that are seen are pain, heat, swelling and redness. Together, these manifestations are called-Inflammation. For example: if someone gets bitten by a bug or has a cut on the skin, we usually see redness, pain, heat and swelling in those areas. This is nothing but a response from our own immune system to the bite or cut.

Our immune system comprises of several cells and chemicals like leukocytes, lymphocytes, mast cells, TNFs, cytokines, interleukines, etc.

These chemicals and mediators cause hypersensitivity reactions that are a series of biochemical reactions, resulting in some serious inflammatory conditions. Some of these are also auto-immune disorders, where the immune cells become hostile and start attacking good cells, thus affecting the organs adversely. Following page will discuss some of them briefly. Feel free to submit your questions in the Contact page.
